Process Description

Dry Film Lubricants (DFL) are solid-based lubricant coatings used to reduce friction, wear, and stick-slip effects. Unlike liquid lubricants, DFL coatings provide a durable, clean, and well-defined lubricating effect. In aerospace applications, DFL systems are selectively used where reproducible friction coefficients and controlled assembly characteristics are required.

DFL coatings typically consist of solid lubricants such as molybdenum disulfide, graphite, or PTFE, an organic or inorganic binder, and tailored additives. After application, a dry, adherent coating is formed that functions without oil or grease. Functional effects include reduction of friction coefficients, protection against wear, and uniform and predictable assembly behavior.

Typical applications include bolts, screws, and fasteners, hinges, guides, and sliding surfaces, assembly support, and components with defined friction requirements. DFL is not a corrosion protection system, not a replacement for IVD or RBC, and not a conventional lubrication method — it is a functional supplemental coating specifically targeting friction and wear behavior.
